Should you become a member of a Real Estate Investment Club?

I'll give you my take on this in just a moment, but first I wanted to comment that there has been a huge surge in the number of clubs across the US and Canada in recent years.  Strong housing markets across the U.S. and Canada helped fuel the number of local clubs...which as of late have been declining.  A little bit of 'weeding out' has been occuring - both in the market and with local investment clubs.  This is a good thing, in my opinion, and I think the good investment clubs will continue, while the ones that you probably never should have been a part of will fall to the wayside. 

The Mastermind Effect
But don't get me wrong, there are some huge benefits of being in a solid, reputable Real Estate Investment Club.  The biggest benefit that I would recommend is the idea of being a part of a 'Mastermind Group'.  This concept was first introduced in the early 1900's by famed author of "Think and Grow Rich", Napoleon Hill. 

Hill described a Mastermind Group as "The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony."  He goes on to say that "No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind."

This is a pretty deep idea when you think about it, but what he's trying to say is that when you get around other individuals of higher caliber, it tends to lift you up.  If you golf, just playing a round with Tiger Woods could change your game for a long period of time for the better - most definitely during that single round with Tiger.  Even if he didn't directly help you with your game, you will pick up on how he is playing, how he swings the club, and his overall game strategy.  The same is true of being a part of a really great Mastermind Group.

Power Networking
Second, and closely related with the Mastermind Group effect is the idea of Networking.  Getting together with others who are trying to reach similar goals can be a powerful concept.  We've all had experiences in our lives where we were a part of a group moving toward a common goal, and felt the exhilaration and comradarie of working together toward that goal.  There is great power in feeling that you're not alone, and there are others going through the same processes and solving the same problems that you're facing.  Powerful stuff...

Deal Collaboration
Finally, a lot of investors get involved with a Real Estate Investment Association, or Group, for the "good deals" that are available.  I will say that it's like anything else in life - that some deals are going to be good, others are a "pass" but getting involved with a club will increase the number of deals that cross your desk, so to speak.  The more deal flow you have, the better opportunity to get that "good deal" that you've been searching for.

These are but a few of the benefits of being involved with a club of high caliber, but there are so much more.  My recommendation is that you check out both your local clubs, and national clubs, like ours at MyPlatinumClub.com and see what they can offer in regards to the 3 Benefits I mentioned above.  Keep these in mind as you're looking for an investment club to help further your education, as well as the Mastermind Effect, and of course, the deal flow.
